Wow. What a year’s it’s been. A lot has changed since I did my review of 2008. We’ve seen the financial world explode, virtually every celebrity on the planet die, and Rage Against The Machine take Christmas Number One. Quite an eventful year, to say the least. Today I’m going to take a month by month look back, with links to old blog posts. If you’re relatively new to reading this blog, this might well be a good place to start. Also I really should go back and do 2006 and 2007 at some point. But first I need to complete work on my time machine.

If you want a more thorough list of blog posts, hit the archive.

January 2009

Exams in Sheffield. Feels strange, writing this sitting in Japan. Just 11 months ago this seems like an impossible dream. How time has flown, I suppose. I wrote a handful of blog posts, my favourite of which was A Japanese Guide To Skipping Work. I chose this one not so much for it’s topic, but because I think of the ‘comedy’ articles I’ve written it’s one of the best. I had a lot of fun writing it, and it serves as a reminder not to be so damn boring all the time!

February 2009

The hardest month to spell was also the hardest month to write in apparently – just two blog posts make Feb 2009 my laziest month of the year. Apologies if you wasted this month just sitting at home refreshing my blog waiting for a post. You need new hobbies. Anyway, post of the month was the Sheffield Japan Day 2009 – Photoshoot. I had great fun taking those shots and it is a reminder of the work that went into that event – not only mine, but the entire team’s. (Actually, they did a lot more work than I did)

March 2009

I suppose it would be lazy to pick my birthday as the best day, but that’s only because I’m sure you all would too… right? It’s going to have to be Jobs For Kenji The Stalker Robot I think, simply because the post got linked to from a lot of other blogs, and it’s always nice to be part of something, rather than the sheer cold isolation I usually feel.

April 2009

I lied! February was not the only month with 2 posts – April also saw a dive in my writing rate. Apologies again. At least it’s easy to spell. This month was spent back at uni, working away at probably the hardest content we ever studied. (Statistics and other horrors). Most memorable post is Japanese Blog Launched, mainly because I still use it now, and it is nice to go back and read once in a while. Makes me all happy inside to see all those squiggles actually mean something once in a while.

May 2009

Lots of posts this month, I suppose the rest in April did work. I wrote quite a few reviews this month (including D’EspairsRay and Densha Otoko) but post of the month is obviously Japan Day 2009. Watching all that work come together at the last moment was an awesome feeling, as was performing Soran again (video here) and having some fun performing the quiz on stage. (For which I used really old blog content for jokes. They call me ‘unoriginal Mike’, you know).

June 2009

It’s summer! Not that you can tell in freezing England. Anyway, at some point in the haze of complex grammar combination and alcohol, I started thinking about my year abroad. Study Year Targets & Goals is a nice list of stuff I want to do. The fact I haven’t done any of them yet is somewhat scary, but in the new year I’m going to have a lot more opportunity to travel, so I should be able to get some, if not all, of them done.

July 2009

The end of the academic year (I think!) It also marked the end of me studying Japanese daily, which I still regret now, but whatever. It gave me more time to chill out, spend a lot of time with the exchange students and have a nice time before flying to Japan. How Not To Stay At A Love Hotel could possibly be my favourite ‘comedy’ post of the year. It’s sharp and snappy, and I love it when I go back to one of my old posts and smile at a joke. Yes. I’m that sad.

August 2009

A tough month. The countdown to Japan is definitely on. Yet I remember this month really dragging by. I was going to choose my trip to London to get my visa as the post of the month, but I think Sunny Scenes At Stanage, Sheffield is a nicer post – it reminds me of my family, and back home in a nice way. Also it proves once and for all that England does get good weather. I’d also like to thank the special effects team for removing all the driving rain and hail in those photos.

September 2009

Japan! Wooo! I wrote 10 posts this month, the most of any of the year, for obvious reasons. I’m back! It’s hardly changed at all! Hurr..err…yeah! It’s very hard to choose a blog post, but it’s fun looking over them – I think the day after I arrived in Tokyo my writing style really shifted – it’s more ‘upbeat’. Lots of exclamation marks. Like this! I suppose Safe And Sound In Tokyo, despite being a bit of a boring post (no pictures!) is the most memorable. Finally back!

October 2009

Settling in can take a long time, but I remember waking up one day in early October and feeling like I was at ‘home’. Not just the dormitory, but the area I live in. So my photos of Warabi City act now as a nice memento, and no matter where I end up I can remember what it felt like living here. Awww.

November 2009

There’s no way I can’t choose Exploring Like It’s ‘06 this month. The new volunteers joined me on a trip to Meiji Shrine. I did honestly feel like I was back, all wide-eyed at the novelty of everything, despite three years having passed. It was really refreshing, and even though they weren’t there, it reminds me of Matt, Nate, Rolf (the volunteers of my year) and everyone else I knew ‘back then’.

December 2009

So here we are. A pretty slow month blog wise, mainly because the amount of time and energy I spent at Sophia was so much. I think Festive Radio Silence is a nice summary post, though. I didn’t really update for a while but it’s nice to be able to read just one article and get a load of information at once.

By my count, I just summed up 12 months in just over a thousand words. That is a scary feat, when you think about it. But it’s done. I hope you enjoyed this post, and I hope you enjoy whatever I write in the future. I also hope Christmas was great for everyone, and that 2010 is another exciting and fun year.

Here’s To A Great 2010! Thanks For Reading!

Hi guys! Just a brief update. As I may have mentioned, recently I made a mistake that resulted in me losing 2500+ photographs from the last year. It was pretty gutting, although thanks to the blog and my Flickr account (more on that later!) it wasn’t life destroying.

But to prevent that ever, ever happening again, I set up a gallery, so that I’d be able to view my photos from anywhere in the world. Then I thought – why not let everyone look at them?

So whilst they’re not very well managed, and I got sick of writing descriptions for them, they are all available. I’m still using my Flickr account as a sort of ’showcase’ – all my favourite photos will be uploaded there. But if you’re really into photographs, or just want to see what I deemed ‘not so good’, head over to the gallery. If you click the link at the top of the page, you’ll see a menu to navigate to both of these.

Hope that wasn’t too boring!

I get a good number of emails asking me various things about my course. As I write about it quite a bit (collection of posts available here) it makes sense people are interested. IF you do have any questions or want to ask anything that I don’t cover here, please do feel free to mail me. Today I’m going to try to provide as much useful information as I can, and I will update it when I can.

Bear in mind I did the course from 2007-2011!
Things may not be in date. I’ll try to keep it updated.

Alright, so let’s get kickin’!

1. Am I qualified to take the course? Can I be allowed on it?
You need, ideally, to meet the grades the university specifies (they may change, I advise checking UCAS or possibly Sheffield’s Website to find what they are now). Aside from that however I really don’t know – I get a lot of people asking if I think they will be allowed on the course. If I had my way, everyone would get on it and we’d all sit around drinking Umeshu all day. But as I don’t run it, I advise asking them instead!

2. What exactly do you learn?
Ok, clarity needed here. I do BA Japanese Studies, but I do not do a dual honors degree. Whilst all students, both single and dual honors, take all the core language modules, outside of that I’m not sure which ones they take. I’m also not sure how many of these modules are still running.

Rather than just write out what I did, I will link to posts where I talked about them in the past. So;

“What I Learned Today” – Covers first part of first year language.

“Post Exam Thoughts & Semester Two Preview” – Covers first semester of first year and Understanding Japan, a compulsory module for single honors Japanese studies.

“Year Two Semester 1 Exam Thoughts” – Covers 2nd year Japanese & Japan’s Minorities, an optional module.

“The Final Exams Before Japan” – Covers second year Japanese language, Postwar Japanese Politics, an optional module, and Contemporary Japanese Society, another mandatory one.

There’s more under the ‘Sheffield University‘ category. These modules change every year – might be worth checking the undergrad modules list of the department.

3. Is it hard?
Yes. Very. The drop out rate is high, the workload is high and for a very long time, the reward is very little. I’m sorry to be so blunt, but we lost about half our year within two years, which sort of shows how cruel this degree is. I honestly believe if you have a good interest in learning it’s doable, although plenty of friends of mine who were much more dedicated than I am didn’t make it, so I don’t know. It’s a very hard question to answer, really. I had my gap year which is sort of why I stuck in there, because I loved it so much. I guess you really need a good reason to study.

4. What do I need to know before I go?
Hiragana and Katakana. Anything on top of that is a bonus, but make sure you have them down. You don’t really need to know any grammar or Kanji, although progression is so rapid it may help to have a grounding before you come.

5. Which universities can I go to for my year abroad?
The university has links with a whole bunch of places, but you don’t get to choose directly. You can specify certain things (Inside/Outside Tokyo, who you’d like to go with etc.) although it’s the universities’ decision in the end.

Hopefully this was useful. If you have any inquiries please either contact me via mail or leave a comment here. I’ll update this post as useful questions come in. Hope to see you at Sheffield some day!

In this entry, (which is now on JapanSoc please soc it!) I will attempt to cover every general topic popular JapanSoc stories deal with in a single article, thus guaranteeing it will get so many socs that the site itself will be sucked into a black hole and the world will end, thus doing the job the Large Hadron Collider couldn’t manage.

Alright, the first thing I need to do is look at some of the most popular stories of all time. There have only been five articles that have collected 30 or more socs;

New Extra Social JapanSoc!
JapanSoc manager Nick finally allowing freedom of speech. Prior to this all communication had to be done in the form of binary code, written out by hand onto pieces of paper and sent to Nick’s house.

JapanSoc Chooses the Best Japanese News
An article praising the site and it’s users for choosing the most appropriately interesting news. Apparently “Japan Is Doomed author Mike loses sandwich, please donate generously to fund a replacement” isn’t suitable.

Japan Blog Matsuri April 2009 Edition
The theme was ‘Slow times in Japan’, and over 30 writers wrote about what they do on their slower days in Japan. I was going to write an article, but I was having a slow day so I did what I usually do on those days: nothing, then lunch, then more nothing.

Japanese people know, “you’ve been living in America too long” when…
Apparently some Japanese people cited reasons to start worrying you’ve been living in the US for too long. My personal suggestion? You understand what’s going on in Boston Legal.

THAT Is One Exhausted Salaryman (PIC)
A picture of a poor salaryman who fell asleep on the train whilst rocking out to some Bon Jovi or something. Personally I don’t think it’s nice to laugh at people’s tiredness. So I refuse to post it here… alright alright I was joking.

Ok, so somehow we need to combine all five of these together into one snappy headline, and also work out a tagline to draw in readers. So here’s my best shot so far;

OK, it’s a start, but it’s not quite there yet. It has a timeless quality, but as JapanSoc evolves, it may be these classic titles simply don’t cut it anymore. So the next thing to do is to find the most supported stories this week, and add them to the mix.

10 Beautiful Japanese Fonts
None of them are the one that adorns the top of my beautiful website. Just sayin’…

Google to reshoot street views of Japanese cities following privacy complaints
Apparently people got offended because they forgot to take the lens cap off when shooting the first time, leading to some foreigners believing Japan was entirely shrouded in darkness.

Have you seen these signs? Good way to learn Japanese
Signs include ‘DO MORE WORK OR I’LL BEAT YOU AGAIN’ and ‘YOU WANNA EAT? CONJUGATE THIS!’

Battleship Island: A Short (and amazing) Documentary
I was going to write something stupid about this entry too but nothing can out-awesome ‘Battleship Island’. An island made out of battleships!

Japanese Tounge Twisters Lessons 4 & 5
Lesson 4 is ‘how to untie your tongue’, meaning people following along with lessons 1 – 3 can finally stop the agony.

Ok so now we have five more articles to add into the mix. So ignoring the first lot to start with, let’s try mixing just these five and finding out what a successful story on JapanSoc takes in this day and age, not ye olde tymes…

Alright good. Now we just need to combine the two…

Japanese people know when a tired salaryman from Battleship Island chose the best font for learning Japanese riddles

That’s right ladies and gentlemen. If you write an article titled ‘Japanese people know when blah blah blah’ you’ll be the most popular person on JapanSoc! (Please don’t, Nick will kill me). I guess the moral of this story is, good work on JapanSoc everyone, keep it up. Also it seems I’ve gone insane (again), someone call for help.

When that happens I will probably keep posting them here as well, but it’s nice to have a place where they are all kept together.

I was going to write a huge post with my thoughts for the year blah blah blah, but I’m having a huge party so I will be too drunk to write anything. The truth is I actually wrote this post earlier on the 28th, then set my blog to post it on the 29th. So this message is coming from the past!

Anyway, thanks for all the support. I’m going to keep blogging through my year at Sophia, so stay tuned!

A Japanese doctor has apologised after saying that people should smoke themselves to an early death to save the country money on elderly care, according to his hospital.

“It is clear that medical costs will increase if non-smoking spreads,” the doctor said last week, according to Ida Hospital in Kawasaki City. “It’s better that people smoke a lot and die early.”

I’m sorry, but when I saw this (on Yahoo! News) I realised I pretty much had to make a blog post about it. Apparently at some big meeting of leading doctors in Japan, one of them busts out this golden gem, that the only way for Japan to relieve the stress of it’s shrinking population is to have everyone smoke themselves to death to stop them claiming a pension and so on.

The best part of the quote is definitely the idea of non-smoking spreading, as it if’s some sort of horrible disease the nature is succumbing to. I’d love to see a movie where a few smokers fight off wave after wave of anti smoking campaigners and nicotine gum packs, fighting so their children might live in a world where everyone smokes.

Fortunately, it’s not all bad news. Smoking is on the decline in Japan, and awareness about it’s affects and so on is getting better. But that’s ok, because I think I’ve come up with a solution that will make everyone this doctor happy!

Smoke fireworks!

The biggest problem with smoking yourself to death is that it takes time, has a lot of horrible pain and suffering, and thus the country has to pay for your health care and so on whilst the process takes it’s time. BUT NO MORE! Smoke some fireworks! Success! Instant gratification! Well, I’m not sure if gratification is the word…

Anyway I look forward to this exciting expose becoming world health news. Or possibly the cops finding my home.

It’s taken a while but finally the US got a president who seemed to offer a whole new look on foreign policy. Being able to post that was an incredibly exciting and refreshing feeling; for the first time in at least eight years, a lot of people felt the US had a president to be proud of, rather than one that should be sent back to primary school, but made to sit away from the other children so as not to distract them.

Obama’s not let us down, either. So far, so good. But what plenty of people are wondering will be ‘What are Obama’s plans for Japan?’ Historically, Japan and the US have had a very close economic and military link, one that has caused tension particularly on the Japanese side, especially with issues like the military bases, Okinawa and Article 9.

I’ve written up a few goals for Japan that I think we can realistically hope for. Please post your thoughts / other goals we might hope to see.

1. Less American forces in Japan

I’m jumping right in and tackling a hot-topic issue here. There are roughly 50,000 US troops in Japan, stationed all over the country with lots in Yokohama (near Tokyo) and Okinawa in particular. The bases in Okinawa are a big issue, because they simply take up so much space and as a result Okinawan culture has sort of been pushed aside by the Japanese government who were and still are desperate to catch up and mimic with the US, and the Americans who sadly only speak English in general.

Ok, this isn’t *entirely* accurate… click for bigger.

So Obama how about we have less troops in Japan?! I know there’s a security reason, especially with North Korea being all aggressive and so on, but the continuous expansion of US military presence is simply too aggressive – people see it as a threat rather than a protector. My theory is Obama have up to half of the soldiers in Japan retrain as builders and bricklayers, and build a huuuuge bridge between Japan and Okinawa. Before September 2009, please. I want to go during my year but it’s too expensive.

2. Better Cultural Understanding

Too many times in Japan did I hear ‘You’re from England? Isn’t that in America?” or the like. I’d like to see a closer cultural link between the US and Japan, which would inevitably lead to closer links with Europe, Australia and so on. Making it easier for people to go on holiday to Japan, do exchanges there and vice versa would help everyone and stop the immigration madness we currently go through. Here in the UK universities offering Chinese are getting extra funding as it’s seen as a key subject, why not Japanese too?

Click for bigger! It's authenti...ok, it's not...

I think of these goals this is one of the more realistic ones, so come on! Reform that education system and get Japan, the US and everyone else all working together to help me learn these Kanji!

3. An Obama-Koizumi Dance Off

With Obama being as freaking cool as he is, and ex-PM Koizumi being a great dancer, how awesome would this be?! I reckon one round of ballroom, one round of Latin and a freestyle round. Who would your money be on?
