Not long ago, I wrote about a song by Spitz called Cherry, and I thought it was time for another. I actually mentioned this song a long time ago in an update I did about Karaoke, but I never posted it because I couldn’t find a nice version. Well, thanks to Matt, this version has come to my attention, which is I believe the original version, as opposed to the dodgy panpipes one I’d found.

I know this is blatant filler material again, but bear with me. We’re in rainy season right now and it’s a miracle that the furious rain and unbearable humidity haven’t managed to drive me insane yet.

Time for the interesting stuff ;)

Nada-sousou does not mean much to the normal Japanese person - it is in the Okinawan dialect and in standard Japanese means “涙がぽろぽろこぼれ落ちる”.

Ofcourse me not having been to Okinawa I called this song “namida sousou” (the “normal” reading) and everyone thought I was really cute…

Although it was first released in March 2000 by Moriyama Ryoko (of the band BEGIN) it was not a big hit until covered by Natsukawa Rimi a year later. There was also a movie made this year about the story behind the song - http://www.nada-so.jp/story.html

This song gets dusted off and re-released each summer, usually selling well.

    I like Rimi Natsukawa version.
Her singing is beautiful with Okinawan taste.
I knew that Ryoko Moriyama wrote this song but didn’t know that she sung originally with BEGIN.
    Very well searched, Leon.(^-^)b

I really love this song! It always remids me of my japanese grandmother who died 2 years ago. Everytime I hear this, it always makes me cry remembering the good time with my grandmother….

  7. Mike says:

Leslie: It seems a lot of people have a lot of strong emotional ties to this song. It’s a great one, and fits the film so well.

  8. Paul says:

actually the song was written by Higa Eisho of the group “Begin” and the lyrics were written by Moriyama Ryoko. She redorded the song first, but was never a member of the band “Begin”. She wrote the lyrics about her brother who died at a young age.

  9. Mike says:

Paul: Yeah I remember reading about that, I just never put it in the update. Oops. :)
