Maybe your friends are just not familiar with listning to songs in “Japanese”?

His voice isn’t hard, strong or deep
but has good character.

I love it, it’s got a really “groovy” bass line. Although I’m not sure about the name of the band. Reminds me of the not-so-famous artist, Swallowz.
